Moving house is one of the most stressful experiences known to man, when you put your whole life on hold and reorganise it in a new place. The rewards however are great - new house, new friends, new job and a fresh start - this is why so many of us move house! You can take out some of the stress with a hassle-free moving day, and these top tips will help.
Plan, plan and plan some more.
Plan your move several weeks before the big day - you can't prepare too much! Take a careful walk around your house or apartment and make a comprehensive list of your possessions. Each piece of furniture will have to find a new home so make a list of where it will go in your new house. You also need to decide if there's anything you want to leave behind. Invest in a load of sticky labels to pin on each item so that you know exactly where it's going to end up.
In the last week before moving you need to clear out your kitchen cupboards and fridge/freezer, planning your meals for the last few days. This will ensure there's no mouldy food lying around for the new owners and you won't run out of things on the last day. Get plenty of milk in to make the removals team tea and coffee!
Spring clean!
Moving house is the perfect time to clear out all your unwanted possessions. Go through all your drawers and cupboards and be ruthless - throw away anything you haven't used in the past year. If things are still in good condition take them to a charity shop or sell them on ebay - you have no excuse for keeping any of your clutter.
Make sure everyone knows your new address
You may not realise it, but there are a lot of companies and services that have your address. From your bank and electricity supplier through to your mobile phone company and favourite online shop, make a list of everyone who has your address and get in touch with them to let them know your new one. This will save hassle the next time you buy something online, and it will ensure that all your post goes to the right place.
Arrange childcare
Your children may be excited about the move but you don't want them under your feet on moving day! Make arrangements for them well in advance - along with arrangements for any pets you have. You need to supervise the removal team but you can pick them up afterwards for the exciting trip to your new home.
If your children are staying at home on moving day prepare their own room out of the way of the removal team. Young children especially will need to be entertained, so give them their own jobs to do.
A smooth moving day is all in the preparation, but there's a lot to remember! Be sure to write everything down and put your lists and schedule in a safe place. A good plan really does take the stress out of moving home!
